Week 2 : Discussion#2_2

Give 1 Filipino literature that you like. Give a short description of what it is about. Why do you like it? “Isang Dosenang Klase ng High School Students” by Bob Ong is one of the unforgettable pieces that I have read. Since I am not fond of reading long literary works, this is definitely one of my favorite pieces so far. Based on the title, this is excerpt from the book “ABNKKBSNPLAko?!” talks about different types of high school students. This includes the clowns, geeks, hollow man, spice girls, da gwapings , celebrities, guinness, leather goods, weirdos, mga anak ni Rizal , Bob Ongs, and the commoners. The reason why I am fond of this work is because of its relatability for high school students.

Week 2: Discussion#2_1

In what ways can you as a Filipino reader be affected by such works  (short stories in Tagalog) that endeavor to open the minds of people on  socio-political and moral issues confronting the country? Just as the bright-minded national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, did back in the Spanish Colonization, he used literature as a tool to unite Filipinos towards a common goal. He used his stories and characters with symbolism that represented the current state of their society back then. This opened the eyes of the people to the cruelty and inequalities that caused them to revolt against this system. In the same way, shorter literary pieces such as short stories can also use the same techniques as Dr. Jose Rizal’s works. These techniques can also be used to discreetly educate the masses about social, political, and moral issues. An example of which is “Sandosenang Sapatos” written by Luis Gatmaitan. This story featured the struggles and a perspective of people with disabilities.

Since I am not fond of reading, I have enjoyed Art of War by Sun Tzu since it is only a short piece. Even though it may seem that this book promotes violence, it actually suggests the opposite. It talks about winning wars without even fighting or with the least possible casualties, and strategies to handle situations that is in favor of the enemy. It is a short collection of quotes from Sun Tzu about the proper mindset to manipulate variables such as the enemy themselves in order to arrive victorious. Even though these information were used on wars, I have still enjoyed it since the information may also be used in real life.

Week 1: Discussion#1

QUESTION: Enumerate the 4 answers on "What is literature for?" based on the video. In your own words, explain each in 2-3 sentences. 1. It saves you time Literature saves us time since it translates long period events into written works which we can read and finish in a shorter amount of time. With this, it lets us feel that we are actually yet safely experiencing these events. Examples of which are experiences from getting divorced, killing someone, being old, and young. 2. It makes you nicer Literature also lets us see the world in different perspectives.   It directly gives us the viewpoint of other people that we cannot do in real life. This then develops our critical-thinking, morality, and empathy. 3. It’s a cure for loneliness We all have thoughts and experiences that we do not share or talk about with others. With this, literature enables us to intimately interact with characters or experiences written within work. It gives us a figure that we can relate to ...
