Week 1: Discussion#1

QUESTION:

Enumerate the 4 answers on "What is literature for?" based on the video. In your own words, explain each in 2-3 sentences.

1. It saves you time

Literature saves us time since it translates long period events into written works which we can read and finish in a shorter amount of time. With this, it lets us feel that we are actually yet safely experiencing these events. Examples of which are experiences from getting divorced, killing someone, being old, and young.

2. It makes you nicer

Literature also lets us see the world in different perspectives.  It directly gives us the viewpoint of other people that we cannot do in real life. This then develops our critical-thinking, morality, and empathy.

3. It’s a cure for loneliness

We all have thoughts and experiences that we do not share or talk about with others. With this, literature enables us to intimately interact with characters or experiences written within work. It gives us a figure that we can relate to which is unable to judge or humiliate us for our secret and inner thoughts and experiences.

4. It prepares you for failure

A wise person learns from their own mistakes, but a wiser one learns from the mistakes of others. Since most popular or successful books and novels are about failures, this gives us detailed information about their experiences. Whenever the same instances are given to us, this either ensures that we would be able to handle the situation well or just have something or someone to relate to.
