Week 3: Discussion#3

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: (5 sentences min.)

1. What do you like more - reading 21st Century Literature (Manga) or watching its video counterpart (anime) like Naruto, Sailormoon, and others? Why?

Honestly, I am just not fond of reading for entertainment especially long pieces. That is why I prefer watching the anime rather than reading the literature or the manga.

Reading offers more details such as different thoughts and perspectives of each character. There are also a lot of extra scenes that are worth knowing but still do not end up in the productions. However, the act of reading is just tiring for me and this applies to other genres of literature such as novels.

However, the video counterpart or the anime offers better overall satisfaction. It has great music, voice actors, and smooth animation and movements. With this, I appreciate video counterparts such as anime and TV series that transfers exciting stories from these literature into other media that I can enjoy.

2. In the example 3D ANIMATION of Sailormoon, the old version of the anime (2D) was shown on 3:19 onwards. What can you say about the difference in the 2D and 3D versions in terms of quality? Did the 3D version appeal to you more? Why?

3D animation offers smoother visuals since they can easily manipulate the frame rates and other features. On the other hand, it is hard for 2D animation to give the same experience since most of them are hand drawn. Only a few animation studios can produce great anime with smooth scenes especially those that are related to action genres.

However, I still prefer the classic 2D animation. Even though it does not offer the same quality as 3D animation, the classic feel of a hand drawn anime is just hard to beat. Then again, it is harder to produce great anime using this type of animation so I will understand it if the upcoming ones use a bit of CGI and other software that involves 3D animation.

3. If you were given the opportunity to write 21st Century literature, what type/genre will it be and why?

If I were to create my own piece, I would write a six-word flash fiction stories. Since I personally do not like long literary pieces, this type is best suited for me. Even though it can be extremely brief, it can still deliver powerful and impactful stories or messages. It also has this sense of tension even though the thought delivered was complete. Moreover, it tickles the mind by making you ask questions and think about further details.
